The astonishing talent of pianist Chucho Valdés first became known outside of his native Cuba when the Stanford Jazz Workshop presented his premiere U.S. performance. Isolated from the developments of the New York and San Juan-based salsa artists in the 1960s, Chucho created his own adventurous blend of jazz, Afro-Cuban, and contemporary music that rocketed him to international stardom once he was free to travel. His group, Irakere, which he founded in 1973, launched the careers of several other well-known Cuban musicians, including trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and multi-reed master Paquito D’Rivera. Accompanied in Bing Concert Hall by bass and percussion, the five-time GRAMMY® Award winning piano powerhouse will present a program that combines the roots of Afro-Cuban music with his unbridled approach to contemporary jazz.
